ABC Restaurant

The porridge is: hot! … “Make-your-own” noodles with a drink included at $8.75… great value and delicious!

I remember when ABC used to be a Hong Kong style cafe with a little bakery on the side  and cheap and fast dishes like macaroni. Imagine my surprise when I walked in to a restaurant with a completely new menu! I guess things change in 3 years. Richerd is always worried about the soup broth for noodles so we were relieved to find that you could “make-your-own” dish!

You get to pick your broth, your noodles, two toppings, and a drink for $8.75. You can also add snacks for $2.50 each. The menu says you can pick from tea or coffee but you can actually pick from the entire drink menu.

Richerd got the original fish soup with rice noodles, corn, and fish balls.

This broth was very subtle and light. Please note that all the noodle soups come with bok choy, fried tofu, and some mushrooms so you’ll want to ask them to keep those out if you don’t like them. I liked everything.

I picked Thai Tom Yum Gong broth with ho fan, enoki mushrooms, and sliced beef

I thought this was not too spicy at first but the spice quickly caught up to me. I had to constantly “steal” from Richerd’s bowl just so I could keep eating this. This was a big bowl with lots of ingredients! The many slices of beef were nice and soft.

See the little trays of sauce on the side? Neither of us used these, thinking the soups already had enough flavour. When I couldn’t finish and asked for takeout, the server cheerfully exclaimed “You didn’t try the sauce? It’s our special recipe. Many of our customers like it so much they ask for TWO! You should try it!” and promptly spooned it into my remaining soup. She was so cheerful and talkative that I thought this was funny instead of being shocked. Turns out it was pretty good.

After we had paid, she still came around to refill our water and told us “no rush, you two sit and chat!” So we did.
