Vietnamese Beef Stew
The porridge (pho) is: Hot! Small ma and pa shop with consistently good pho! Small interior but with discounts on takeout.
A Vietnamese restaurant called Vietnamese Beef Stew. That’s like having a steakhouse called Steak. This cozy restaurant is in the strip mall beside Sir Winston Churchill High School. I remember a petite Vietnamese lady running this place back when I was a student there, ahem, many years ago. They have since added many more booths and the place is a lot brighter overall.
When you walk into the restaurant, try to avoid sitting on the left side as this is the side the door opens and if the place is busy, you will experience a cold gust of wind every time someone opens the door. I say this from years of experience as a student rushing to finish my bowl of pho during lunch hour.
You can sit at the long table towards the back if you’re eating by yourself and don’t want to feel lonely in a booth. Or you could just get takeout since you get a 10% discount! Helen and I were talking about why takeouts get discounts. My guess? “No need to do the dishes.”
Sliced Beef Pho Large $7.95
This broth was slightly sweet but luckily didn’t taste like sweet soy sauce. (The colour of some pho soups around.. argh.) There’s just something very comforting about a nice bowl of pho. The thin meat strips were tender and the amount of meat was quite generous. I really liked this but had to give tons of noodles to Helen because a large was just too big for me.
Satay Vegetable Pho Regular size $7.95
Richerd ordered this and was concerned because he thought it was a beef broth. However, this tasted completely different from my pho and not just because of the satay. Being vegetarian is hard because some places will use fish broth in their “vegetarian” dishes. It’s a good thing he’s a pescetarian. (No meat but seafood is allowed.) I can’t 100% say this dish was all vegetarian but he enjoyed it. Lots of vegetables and the cauliflower and broccoli bits were soft but not mushy, just the way I like them.
