Big Catch

On Sept 30th I finally got to head down to Kingsland Farmer’s Market to try some Big Catch sushi! It was Super Sample Sunday and they were offering samples of the Rainbow Roll.

Look at the amount of thought and detail. (Keep in mind these were just sample plates!) The Rainbow Roll consisted of crab meat and avocado topped with salmon, tuna, avocado and shrimp.

Rainbow Roll 9 pcs. $ 11.75

I was a bit worried about the mayonaise but it didn’t overpower the flavours of the fish at all. I’m also usually not that big of a fan of “California Roll fillings” but these were the perfect bite-size and very creamy.

Salmon sashimi 5pcs.  $7.50

I love salmon sashimi. Having moved all the way to Japan in search of good sashimi, I quickly discovered that I actually prefer salmon sashimi in Canada. Unbelievable. Big Catch offers 2 different types of salmon sashimi: Wild Salmon and Atlantic Salmon. I went for the Atlantic. The cuts were perfect and the fish was oh so fresh. I could eat these all day long.

Zesty Avalanche 9 pcs. $11.75

The menu says this is “spicy mayo infused salmon and daikon topped with prawn and avocado served with light mayo.” One thing that makes or breaks sushi, besides the quality of the fish, is the quality of the sushi rice. Big Catch didn’t disappoint on either counts. The salmon in this roll was just as good as the sashimi and complemented the avocado very nicely. The only disappointing thing was that I did not taste any spiciness at all. More zest, please!

One thing that really impressed me about Big Catch is just how beautiful everything is. All the flowers were crunchy and refreshing too, definitely not something just for decoration.

Big Catch is just a small stand at the farmer’s market right now but I’ll be looking forward to seeing them grow. Please note that the market is only operating Thursdays to Sundays. Watch out Calgary, this little gem is here to stay!
